Victoria | Melbourne Return Road Trip Itinerary

When most people think of Victoria, Melbourne often takes centre stage—and for good reason. This buzzing city is known for its vibrant culture, hidden laneways, and epic food scene. But there’s more to Victoria than just its cosmopolitan heart.

If you are ready to explore beyond the city limits, then get a cuppa and sit back as we take you on a 5-day journey that starts and ends in Melbourne, giving you a taste of all that regional Victoria has to offer.

Veering away from the more touristy Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and Great Ocean Road in the south, this road trip ventures north into the Murray River region, past riverside towns like Echuca and Swan Hill to the natural beauty of Cobram.

Whether you’re in a campervan hire from Melbourne or hitting the road in a motorhome hire from another state and just looking for things to do in Victoria, we’ve planned out a route that’s perfect for families eager to explore Victoria’s countryside.

When to visit Victoria

Victoria is a year-round destination, but the best time to set off on a campervan hire Melbourne road trip largely depends on what you want to experience:

  • Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are ideal for mild weather and fewer crowds, making them perfect for outdoor activities and exploring the countryside.

  • Summer in Melbourne and the surroundings (December to February) is great for enjoying the rivers and beaches but be prepared for higher temperatures and more tourists.

  • Winter (June to August) offers a quieter experience with cooler weather, ideal for those who enjoy a cozy atmosphere and fewer crowds.

Weather & Seasons in the Northern Territory

To get the most out of your time in the Northern Territory, we could recommend visiting during the dry season, which is between May and October.

It's worth noting that due to the Northern Territory's wet season (monsoonal rains and tropical storms) the Apollo Darwin and Alice Springs branches have a seasonal closure each year between late December and the end of March. The Darwin and Alice Springs branches then re-open at the start of the dry season on the 1st of April each year.

The Northern Territory has two distinct climates - the tropical Top End (Darwin) and the semi-arid Red Centre (Alice Springs).  The Northern Territory's capital, Darwin, has an average temperature of 32 degrees Celsius year round, but weather is more mild during the dry season. It's important to remember that no matter when you visit the Northern Territory, we would recommend that you stay hydrated, be sun smart and dress for the conditions.
