Weather & Seasons in Tasmania

To get the most out of your time in Tasmania, we could recommend planning and taking note of the seasons and typical weather you may experience during your trip.

It's worth noting that while Tasmania does have four distinct seasons, given its proximity to the Southern Ocean, the weather in Tassie can vary greatly on any given day, and in any season. The warmest months are through Summer - December, January, and February - however, even in Summer, Tasmania can have cold, windy and wet weather. Autumn and Spring typically bring still and sunny days, while in winter Tassie turns into a winter wonderland with snow found in higher altitude regions.

We would recommend that you stay hydrated, be sun smart and dress for the conditions - it's worth packing a warm jacket as well as a wind and rain proof jacket no matter when you're visiting beautiful Tasmania.

Brisbane to Cairns Autumn Road Trip

If you’re planning a trip to tropical north Queensland, here’s why you need to go in Autumn

Driving from Brisbane to Cairns in a motorhome is an amazing way to see the eastern coastline, and once you arrive in Cairns you’ll find lush rainforests, pristine beaches, heaps of wildlife and plenty of adrenaline packed activities on offer for the whole family.

Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and is a location that should be on your bucket list for Australian travel destinations – and you can experience it at your own pace when you hire a campervan or motorhome with Apollo.

Here’s our top reasons why Autumn (March – May) is a great time to rent a camper and road trip from Brisbane to Cairns -

Autumn is low season

There are so many reasons why travelling in the shoulder seasons of Autumn and Spring should not be overlooked! By travelling in the Autumn low season, you can expect a much quieter experience compared to the peak of summer. With most domestic travellers heading back to school and work in February, you’ll find cheaper nightly prices at campsites, less crowds at beaches and a relaxed atmosphere all round. Plus, you can enjoy the beautiful weather without the hustle and bustle and have the spa at your campground all to yourself.

Autumn weather is mild and comfortable

Autumn is a great time to visit Cairns as the weather is mild and pleasant. Autumn on the east coast of Queensland brings cooler temperatures, lower humidity levels and fewer rainy days. These conditions combine to make for some excellent road trip and outdoor activity weather, perfect for hiking, snorkelling, and swimming. Trust us, you’ll want to avoid the humidity, steamy days and wet weather that summer brings. With Autumn average temperatures for Cairns around 20 – 22 decrees C overnight and 27 – 29 degrees C during the day, plan your Brisbane to Cairns campervan road trip for Autumn and thank us later!

Crystal clear waters in the Great Barrier Reef

Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef – the world’s largest coral reef system, one of the seven wonders of the world, and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage listed area. Peak season for visiting the reef is June to October, so if you’re wanting to explore the reef and snorkel with less crowds, we’d recommend visiting in March – May. Autumn is a great time to explore the reef as there’s less rainfall, underwater visibility is high, and you’ll likely see some juvenile fish! You’ll enjoy being in the water in Autumn as the water temperatures are perfect for snorkelling, diving, and swimming.

Autumn is lush in the tropics

After the soaking summer rains, you’ll find the East Coast of Queensland alive with vibrant green landscapes ready for you to explore from the comfort of a motorhome. Along the drive form Brisbane to Cairns, you’ll discover lush rainforests, and plenty of creeks and rivers flowing with fresh water. Let’s not forget that the waterfall chasing will be amazing in Autumn too! It’s a great time to do some white water rafting or waterfall epxloreing, and the Autumn temperatures make for more comfortable hiking and walking.

Arts and cultural events in Autumn

There are plenty of amazing events on in Cairns over Autumn, ready for you to enjoy without the hustle and bustle that visiting the tropical north in peak season usually brings. Arts and cultural events and attractions are a great way to experience the unique culture of the tropical north and learn about the history of the area – so make sure you check out what’s on in the region when you visit.

Cairns is the perfect destination to explore in Autumn with its mild weather, beautiful attractions, lush rainforests, and fewer crowds.
