Travel along the stunning North Queensland coastline where you will encounter secluded beaches and charming holiday towns.
Welcome to one of the most popular drives in Queensland. The Great Barrier Reef Drive may be short but it covers some of Tropical North Queensland’s most famous and stunning spots, including World Heritage sites, national parks and wildlife only found in North Queensland. Be sure to pack your bikinis and boardies, your rental campervan is waiting to explore the stunning coastline with you!
This road trip includes the only place in the world where dual World Heritage areas of the Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef collide and is nothing short of spectacular. You really do have to see it to believe it, as there's nothing else in the world quite like it.
This round trip from Cairns through Queensland’s scenic tropical coastline will take you to some of Australia's most breathtaking locations.
Day 1: Cairns to Palm Cove (27km, 35mins)
Day 2: Palm Cove to Port Douglas (43km, 41mins)
Day 3: Port Douglas
Day 4: Port Douglas to Mossman Gorge (22km, 21mins)
Day 5: Mossman Gorge to Cape Tribulation (68kms, 1hr 36mins)
Day 6: Cape Tribulation
Day 7: Cape Tribulation to Cairns (142km, 2hr 45mins)
While in Port Douglas, hop on board one of the many boats leaving for the Great Barrier Reef. Whether you prefer a quick trip to the Low Isles or a full-day family-friendly jaunt on a reef platform. In just 40 minutes, you can be on the Outer Reef, giving you a full day of snorkelling or diving at various spots coming eye to eye with the diverse ecosystem of coral and marine life that lives beneath the surface.
While exploring Tropical North Queensland, walk through the Cape Tribulation forest on hiking trails and wooden boardwalks, climb high above the canopy on ziplines, take a dip in the Emmagen Creek swimming hole or paddleboard along the still waters of the Mossman River. Look out for Cassowary birds as they peck their way through the undergrowth and always be on watch for crocodiles along the Daintree River.
Throughout Tropical North Queensland there are a number of species that can only be found in this unique location. Throughout your journey make sure you spot at least one! The Southern Cassowary, Bennett’s and Lumholtz Tree-Kangaroos, Daintree River Ringtail Possum, Buff Breasted Paradise Kingfisher, Ulysses Butterfly & Spotted-Tailed Quoll are all unique to this special place.
